Former assistant minister Prof. Julia Ojiambo was among the high profile politicians who attended the funeral of ex-minister James Osogo on Saturday.
Osogo was laid to rest in Budalang’i constituency in a funeral that was also attended by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
Busia County Governor Paul Otuoma and COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli, were also in attendance.
But the presence of Prof. Ojiambo never went unnoticed. The former Funyula MP is one of the most iconic women in the history of Kenyan politics.
In 1974, she made history by becoming the second woman to be elected to Parliament after Kisumu’s Grace Onyango.
She would go on to make her own history by becoming the first woman in the history of Kenya to be appointed as assistant minister.
One of the most successful women ever in the history of the country, in 2007, Prof Ojiambo was picked as former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka’s running mate in the presidential race. The pair finished distant third behind President Mwai Kibaki and the ODM party leader.
In a life of many firsts both in academia and politics, the former legislator is the first Kenyan woman to be admitted to the prestigious Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts.
Her most recent assignment in the lengthy public service career was when she was appointed as University of Nairobi Council chairperson by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Though she is now 87 years old, she remains an influential and respected leader.
