Samburu: KWS swings into action after orphaned zebra is found suckling its mother’s carcass

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) rescued a Grevy’s zebra foal in Lengardae, Samburu County after its mother died shortly after birth.

In a statement on Tuesday, January 23, 2034, KWS said its team from the Northern Kenya Mobile Vet Unit swung to action after the foal was found suckling its mother’s carcass.

KWS said the zebra died of postpartum complications shortly after giving birth to the foal.

“Yesterday, KWS Northern Kenya Mobile Vet Unit rescued an infant Grevy’s zebra foal in Lengardae, Samburu. The heart-warming rescue took place as the orphaned foal was discovered desperately suckling on its mother’s carcass, who had tragically succumbed to postpartum complications,” KWS said.

KWS added that the orphaned foal was taken to Reteti Animal Rescue Centre.

“The dedicated team acted swiftly to secure the vulnerable foal and took it to Reteti Animal Rescue Centre,” the wildlife conservation body said.

KWS additionally stressed that the rescue mission underscored its core objective of wildlife conservation and management.

“This successful rescue not only saved the foal but also emphasized the significance of wildlife conservation and protection ensuring a legacy of thriving biodiversity for generations to come,” KWS stated.
