President William Ruto paid an impromptu visit to the Kibera Affordable Housing Project to inspect the ongoing construction.
In a statement, StateHouse Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed reiterated the government’s dedication to addressing the housing crisis faced by low-income earners.
Mohamed conveyed President William Ruto’s dedication to constructing 250,000 houses annually, envisioning a new generation of homeowners.
“President @WilliamsRuto makes an impromptu visit to the Kibera Affordable Housing Project. The government is creating a new generation of homeowners under the Affordable Housing Programme by constructing 250,000 houses every year for low-income earners,” Hussein noted.
He mentioned that Ruto is actively involved in the initiative, making sure that the Affordable Housing Programme becomes a driving force for positive change.
Hussein noted that 17,850 units had already been commissioned in Mukuru, Rongai, and Kibera, strategically positioned to alleviate the housing burden experienced by low-income earners.
Additionally, he said 28,942 units are in various stages of construction nationwide, with the goal of providing decent and affordable shelter for over 6.5 million Kenyans residing in slums and informal settlements.
“The construction of another 28,942 units is ongoing countrywide. The Affordable Housing Programme targets the over 6.5 million Kenyans living in slums and informal settlements,” Hussein asserted.
Ruto: Kibera slum will be an estate
This comes following Ruto’s promise to address one of Africa’s largest slums, Kibera, as part of his Affordable Housing initiative.
Ruto, speaking during a church service at Deliverance Church International in Lang’ata, Nairobi, rallied support for his plan to construct over 200,000 houses in Nairobi within the next five years.
“We want to build 200,000 houses across Kenya. In Nairobi alone, in the next five years, we are planning to build 200,000 houses. We are also moving people from the slums. In 10 years, there will be no slum in Kibera; we’ll have transformed it into an estate,” Ruto affirmed.
