On Sunday, August 27, 2023, two of Siaya’s arguably most astute politicians joined hands at the ACK Agulu Church in Central Alego and made a pact to begin the journey to rescue Siaya from cartels and political sabotage.

Engineer Nicholas Odero Gumbo, runner-up in the August 2022 gubernatorial race and Dr. William Oduol Denge, Deputy Governor of Siaya County have vowed to ensure that Governor James Aggrey Orengo serves a single term.
“Orengo has demonstrated that he cannot run the affairs of Siaya County,” said Eng. Odero Gumbo, adding ” We have come together to rescue Siaya from cartels and to ensure Orengo goes home without cleaning out the treasury.”

Orengo who was all along an underdog in the gubernatorial contest trounced Gumbo (220,349 votes against 147,558) largely with the support of William Oduol who had the backing of the populous Alego-Usonga Constituency. Should the two come together then Governor James Aggrey Bob Orengo’s days as Governor are numbered.
As the motorcade of Oduol-Gumbo snaked its way through Mulaha, Township Ward, happy residents thronged the roadside to wish the new union well.
In the meantime, Governor Orengo is facing a silent rebellion among high-ranking officials of the county government who are afraid his cronies may run down the county through corruption. Issues of selective promotion, over-employment and single-source bidding on tenders are undermining the functionality of government.

Insider sources have revealed discontentment with how the Chief of Staff, a retired military official, with little know-how in human resource management is running the affairs of the county. Fingers are also being pointed at Mr Orengo’s Personal Assistant who together with an ex-Chairman of Siaya County Council seem to be running a parallel government.
Meanwhile, in what appears as a wake-up call to Governors the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission has opened up investigations on KES 1.3 billion misappropriated under the watch of former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya. Oparanya is being investigated for financial anomalies largely committed by his cronies. Should the same limelight be turned on Siaya (past or present administrations) the details would be outright shocking.
The Deputy Governor Dr. William Oduol Denge has been the subject of numerous botched impeachment attempts by the Siaya County Assembly whenever he raises attention to the ongoing rampant corruption in the Siaya County Government. By teaming up with the independent-minded Nicholas Odero Gumbo the duo bring to the table superior managerial skills and vast political experience.
