New bill to bar police from investigating colleagues implicated in crime.

The police will no longer be allowed to investigate colleagues implicated in crime if a bill currently in Senate is enacted, the Security Services Laws Amendment Bill 2023 provides that all officers implicated in crime will be probed by Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA). The proposed law which has been introduced in the Senate for first reading is sponsored by Senate’s Justice Legal Affairs and Human Rights Committee chairman Hon. Hillary Sigei.

If the bill passes, it will be a game changer for many Kenyans who have been denied justice under rogue police officers who cover their fellow officers for their dirty deeds. The bill will ensure that both parties are accorded fair justice under the law and that the police won’t be able to arm-twist a case to favour a colleague. The law will make Kenyans have more faith in the criminal justice system where everybody will be equal under the law.
