Country’s oldest party, KANU, has issued a statement ahead of Saba Saba protests against President William Ruto’s government called by Azimio La Umoja One Kenya party leader Raila Odinga.
There have been speculations that KANU has silently withdrawn from the Opposition coalition as its party leader Gideon Moi has been conspicuously missing in Azimio press conferences.
Moi, the youngest son of country’s second President Daniel arap Moi, has kept a low profile since he lost his Bungoma Senate seat to William Cheptumo of Ruto’s UDA.
Now, a few hours to anti-government demos set for Friday, July 7, at Nairobi’s Kamukunji Grounds and other parts of the country, KANU Secretary General George Wainaina has clarified that his party has not cut ties with Raila-led Azimio.
“KANU Party is an active participant in the Azimio Coalition, a coalition of like-minded parties and individuals who share a common vision for Kenya’s future,” he said.
Wainaina went ahead to ask Kenyans to join KANU saying they will become part of a broader Azimio movement which he said is “dedicated to advancing the interests and aspirations of the Kenyan people.”
The Sec Gen, however, did not disclose whether Moi will join Raila, Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Jeremiah Kioni (Jubilee), Martha Karua (Narc-Kenya), Eugene Wamalwa (DAP-K) and other Azimio leaders during the Saba Saba demos.
But KANU’s candidate in Mathare MP race in 2022, Weston Wanjohi, was categorical that he won’t join the protests which he described as a purely ODM affair.
“I am a KANU and not an ODM Member. RAILA Odinga does not think and/or speak for me. Tulipe ushuru tujitegemee! The unpatriotic call for Tax Boycott is an ODM affair and should be ignored,” Wanjohi posted on Facebook.
