In their attempt to prevent the establishment of the office of the Leader of the Opposition, the One Kenya Coalition conversation team is up against a difficult battle. There are worries that this approach would cause a serious disruption that makes orientation challenging.
The President’s focus on this idea during a trip to the Mt. Kenya region, where he attempted to defuse tensions with the opposition by holding scheduled talks, suggests that he is deeply committed to this idea.
Azimio is facing internal strife over the office arrangement as the dialogue team gets ready to meet for agenda-setting discussions.
While some members of Azimio are sympathetic to the idea, others believe a state-funded office may weaken the opposition.
“Imagine a scenario where we entrench the post in the Constitution and then a weak opposition that can easily go to bed with the government comes into play. It will be like the auctioning we are witnessing between MCAs and the Executive,” he said.
Reportedly, Azimio insiders reveal that the team has not yet reached a definitive stance on the issue. They intend to decide once the proposal is officially brought up in the bi-partisan discussions.
Migori Senator Eddy Oketch stated that the proposal belongs to Kenya Kwanza, and Azimio is not inclined to engage in discussions about it. He emphasized that their primary priorities revolve around tackling the high cost of living, addressing electoral discrepancies through a 2022 election audit, reconstituting the IEBC, and preventing unwarranted interference with political parties.
