Fireworks as Raila Odinga’s camp has responded to Senate Speaker Amason Kingi after terming evidence tabled by Busia County Senator Okiya Omtatah on the Finance Act 2023 as illegal.
Through ODM party Secretary General and Nairobi County Senator Edwin Sifuna, Raila’s camp has termed the allegations by Kingi as lies while threatening to impeach him over perjury.
“The Speaker has lied under Oath. This is Perjury an offense for which he should be impeached and prosecuted.” Edwin Sifuna said.
Kingi had argued that he wrote to the Speaker of the National Assembly withdrawing a letter dated June 15, warning that the Finance Act 2023 would affect the county governments and needed to be discussed by both houses.
The speaker assets that the Act does not affect the county governments as alleged by Omtatah and was advised to withdraw the letter illegally obtained and filed as evidence to mislead the court.
Kingi therefore argued that the court erred in issuing conservatory orders against the Finance Bill 2023, thus granting Omtatah’s prayers on barring President William Ruto from enforcing tax hikes.
It should be noted that the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority, EPRA had defied the court orders and had gone ahead to increase the fuel prices. Omtatah had responded by threatening to sue EPRA for contempt of court while giving the body ultimatum to drop the hiked fuel prices.
