Prof. Kibwana served as Makueni County Governor for two terms before losing in his quest for senator position during the 2022 general election.

The Harvard University-educated lawyer was one a key member of the former President Mwai Kibaki cabinet. After the 2007 general election, he was appointed as the President’s chief advisor on coalition matters.

Considered one of the second liberation heroes in the country’s quest for multiparty politics, Prof. Kibwana is a respectable figure in Kenya’s reform agenda.

After losing the 2022 general election, Prof. Kibwana decamped to President William Ruto’s axis. He would later announce his retirement from active politics.

The former county chief was also among those who had applied for the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission chairperson position. However, Dr Ruto settled on archbishop Dr David Oginde for the powerful position.
