The reason why Raila Odinga, the head of the Azimio la Umoja coalition, cancelled his planned demonstrations for today and requested a vigil in their place has been made clear.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) reportedly warned the opposition team to cancel their planned protests after many of their supporters died, which could have resulted in some Azimio leaders being interrogated for allegedly causing mayhem in the nation.
Part of today’s reports from People Daily stated, “Pressure from the international community, particularly from ICC had already cautioned both sides of the political divide, but could not make President Ruto budge and, instead, stepped up his crackdown on the opposition.”
This occurred after Raila halted the demonistrations and summoned his supporters to hold a vigil for the victims who died as a result of the demonistrations. They will also organise a fundraising effort to comfort the relatives of the deceased souls.
