Cheers as Kiraitu Murungi Names His Preferred Meru Kingpin as He Speaks Of His Political Future

Former Meru Governor, Kiraitu Murungi, was one of the politicians who accompanied president William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua for an interdenominational thanksgiving service at Laare, Igembe North constituency in Meru county.

While making his speech, Kiraitu said that he had retired from Meru politics and thanked the people for supporting him throughout his political journey.

“I have officially retired from Meru politics and I want to thank each and everyone of you for supporting me throughout my journey. Even though I lost in this last election, there are many other elections that I had won before and all this was possible because of you,” noted Kiraitu. (Watch video from 3:30 min).

The former Governor also announced retirement as the Meru Kingpin, a position, according to him, he held from 2002 when Mwai Kibaki was elected as the third president.

“Back in 2002 when Kibaki took power, elders and politicians from this region appointed me to represent them in pushing the agenda of our people. They did not appoint me because I was the best, no, but because I was viewed as the person closest to the president,” noted the former Governor.

“Since then, I have been privileged to hold the position and together we have achieved much. I thank you for the support and now that I have exited the political space I suggest that we get another captain from Meru who will push for our interests,” added Murungi.

Kiraitu suggested the Agriculture cabinet secretary, Mithika Linturi, to take over the mantle since he is close to the executive. He attributed the ongoing political wrangles in Meru county to lack of a kingpin.

“I suggest that we all rally behind Mithika Linturi because he is currently in the position that I was during the Kibaki era. Linturi will be responsible in solving political disquiet in our region and also push our interests in this government. This noise you are hearing from Meru is because we do not have a captain,” stated the former Governor. (Watch video from 4:35 min).

The event was also graced by several other political leaders among them; Governor Kawira Mwangaza, CS Mithika Linturi, Senator Kathuri Murungi, MP Ndindi Nyoro, MP Mary Waithira among others. ef0f0b98415245678fe39e406615d372?quality=uhq&resize=720
