Young Aussie reveals the secret perks of attending a private school that the rich struggle to admit: ‘There’s a huge difference’

A public-educated entrepreneur has revealed the three crucial benefits he believes are only available to those who have attended private schools.

Zane Marshall, founder of marketing agency Lux Social, claimed that 70 percent of the CEOs leading the country’s 100 largest companies were privately educated.

Mr Marshall said private schools offered their students three things: good education, high levels of self-esteem and exclusive networking opportunities.

“If you look at the difference between public and private schools, there is a huge difference, despite what people say,” he said in a TikTok video.

“I think students at private schools have the biggest advantage: it’s who you know, the network you’re exposed to. Of course, the level of education plays a major role, but the network is the most important.

“When I compare my friends who went to private schools, they all went on to very high-paying jobs or had great opportunities early on through their private school network.

“Whether it came from the sports team, whether it was from a friend of a friend they went to school with, someone’s uncle, someone’s father, they all had really good opportunities through the network at school.”

Mr Marshall said the level of self-esteem students receive at private schools is the most important ingredient for future success.

“The level of self-confidence and high level of self-esteem instilled in private school students by their teachers. “I didn’t get that in public school,” he said.

Viewers were divided on the video, with some public school students saying they were able to achieve success without any help or connections.

“I went to public school – it was an absolute dead end with no connection,” said one.

“Great doctors, engineers and scientists all come from public schools. Maybe our money goes more to public schools. Give everyone equal education,” wrote a second.

Others, however, agreed that private school students had an advantage.

“So a private education is LinkedIn without the app,” someone wrote.

‘This is an absolute truth. The networking is more valuable than anything else. Parents also invest much more because of the costs,” says a second.

A third wrote: ‘Mainly applies to the elite private schools. Not just networking, you learn the mannerisms, social etiquette, faux pas and insight into global old money.’

“Probably because they also have generational wealth?” a fourth shared to which Mr Marshall replied: ‘Absolutely. That is normally also a strong factor.’

One commenter said they excelled at private school but had “failed at life.”

“I was doomed to failure by the enormous expectations placed on me,” they said.

‘It doesn’t matter if you go to a private school, because the elite monitors their networks. These positions are filled because of nepotism, not because of ‘who you know,’” said another.

Atlassian co-founder Scott Farquhar and his wife Kim Jackson have children at Cranbrook, an exclusive private school in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.

However, Mr Farquhar – whose net worth is more than $18 billion – attended the government-funded James Ruse Agricultural School in Carlingford.

His co-founder of Atlassian, Mike Cannon-Brookes, graduated from Cranbrook, whose alumni also include casino magnate James Packer and his father Kerry.

Former Prime Minister Scott Morrison attended the public Sydney Boys High School, while his successor, Anthony Albanese, went to St Mary’s Cathedral College.

In 2014, a review by AFR Weekend found that two-thirds of Australian CEOs of Australia’s 100 largest companies attended private schools.

Woolworths chief executive Grant O’Brien was found to be the only publicly educated CEO in the top 10 companies.

At the time, 65 percent of Australian children attended government-run schools.
