In the early hours of yesterday morning, a journey from Bangkok to Pattaya took a terrifying turn when a van ferrying four Chinese tourists collided with an 18-wheeler on the Pattaya motorway. The collision, which occurred around 1.30am on April 6, resulted in injuries for six occupants of the van, including four tourists.
The accident happened on the 85+400-kilometre marker of the motorway in the suburban area of Bang Phra, located in Sri Racha district, Chon Buri province. The van, a Toyota Commuter model, was on its way to Pattaya when it was struck by the massive Hino truck. The force of the accident sent the van careening off the road and into a guardrail.
Among the six people injured in the grisly crash were two Chinese men, two Chinese women, and two Thai men. Four of them sustained minor injuries, while the remaining two were trapped in the wreckage of the vehicle, though, thankfully, their injuries were not severe.
Following the accident, all the victims were swiftly transported to local hospitals in the vicinity. The driver of the van, a 48 year old Thai man by the name of Kampliw, recounted to police that he had been driving as usual when the 18-wheeler suddenly swerved into his lane, causing the collision, reported The Pattaya News.
The truck driver, who has not been identified, has so far abstained from giving any statements to the police. The local police continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash and are in the process of further interrogating the truck driver.
In related news, a fatal collision in Bangkok resulted in the death of an unknown foreigner and the severe injury of a Thai man. The incident took place on Charoen Nakhon Road, Khlong San, Bangkok at 2.50pm on April 1, and involved a large motorcycle colliding with a smaller one.
