Silverchair’s Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou have finally revealed exactly how the iconic rock band ended.

Writing about Silverchair’s demise in their newly-released joint memoir, the pair claimed that frontman Daniel Johns put them on an ’emotional rollercoaster’ by breaking up the band multiple times – only to then change his mind.

However, things finally came to an end then the trio performed at the Groovin’ The Moo music festival in 2010.

Gillies said that he received a ‘confusing call’ from Johns shortly after the performance, saying the two words, ‘It’s inevitable’.

While Johns never explicitly said that the band was breaking up, Gillies and Joannou were later informed by their manager that it was over and that a press release announcing their ‘indefinite hiatus’ would be going out to the media.

‘We wanted to scream. It shouldn’t have ended like that,’ the pair write in their memoir, according to news.com.au.

‘Even if the three of us weren’t aligned on the way to go forward together, we deserved to go out in a way that celebrated our achievements as a band,’ they continued.

‘If it was really over, we deserved more than a press release that left everything floating in the ether, even if that was the agreed approach. At the very least, we owed it to ourselves to have a face-to-face adult conversation and make the decision together.’

It comes after the bassist and drummer, both 43, opened up about their estranged bandmate, 44, after he refused to let them use his songs in their ABC documentary about the band.

Speaking on WSFM’s The Jonesy and Amanda Show, the musicians said they had ‘drifted apart’ from Daniel since Silverchair disbanded in 2011.

Things became awkward when hosts Brendan ‘Jonesy’ Jones and Amanda Keller pressed them on whether they were still in communication with their estranged bandmate.

‘We’ve all drifted into different directions over the years and done different projects,’ Ben carefully told the radio hosts.

He continued: ‘And it’s no disrespect to any individual in the way things rolled out, it’s just what happened.’

The duo also admitted Daniel was ‘not involved’ in their memoir Love & Pain which they co-wrote to document the history of Silverchair.

Their joint radio interview came just hours after Daniel broke his silence on ABC’s decision to pull part one of its Australian Story documentary A Silver Lining.

The two-part series, which premiered on September 18, tells the story Silverchair’s meteoric rise to fame with interviews from Ben and Chris.

Daniel, who has been estranged from Ben and Chris since the band split in 2011, did not participate in the documentary.

Fans were surprised last Tuesday when Australian Story announced on social media that ABC had removed part one of A Silver Lining from its streaming platform iView.

At the time, The Daily Telegraph reported that Daniel and his brother Heath (who runs the label BMG Music Australia), had not given ABC the rights to publish Silverchair’s music on iView.

Daniel finally set the record straight on Sunday, posting a lengthy essay to Instagram explaining why he chose not to give ABC permission to republish his songs.

‘Australian Story reached out to me via my team “as a courtesy” on August 11 to let me know that they were doing a story on Ben and Chris. I was and remain incredibly supportive of them telling their story,’ he said.

Daniel went on to say he had nothing to do with Ben and Chris’ memoir, and he felt uncomfortable ‘promoting’ the book without knowing what they wrote about him.
