Jane Nduta, the mother of David Chege has mourned the loss of her son who was tragically shot outside Parliament.
Nduta gave her tribute on July 9, 2024, during the funeral service for David that was held at his parents’ Turiru village home in Gatundu.
Overwhelmed with grief, Jane expressed her deep sorrow and in a heartfelt message, asked David to thank God on her behalf.
Reflecting on her son’s life, Nduta fondly recalled watching him grow into a compassionate man filled with wisdom.
Additionally, Nduta expressed her pride at the kindness and intelligence David embodied throughout his life.
“Today we gather to pay tribute to my son who left us far too soon. As his mother, I am proud to watch him grow as a good example to his family and friends. His kindness, compassion and his wisdom will forever echo in our hearts,” Nduta remarked.
“Your physical time is over, however, I ask of you this one favour, please put those hands I held you with, one on your brother and one on God’s hands to guide him in this journey until we reunite. Please tell God thank you for me, tell him how grateful, thankful and privileged I feel that he chose me to be your mom, and I hope I made him proud…I hold you with my whole entire heart.”
Kenyan activists, including Boniface Mwangi, Hanifa and Haki Africa Executive Director Hussein Khalid, were among the mourners who joined in for Chege’s final send-off.
Previously, human defender Boniface Mwangi had called on Kenyans to attend the burials of protesters shot during the anti-Finance Bill 2024.
Mwangi said the protesters should be buried in caskets draped in the Kenyan flag because they died fighting for justice.
He attended Saturday’s burial of one of the protesters, Andrew Mwawasi, at Lang’ata cemetery, Nairobi.
“Andrew Kelvin Mwawasi has been laid to rest. For those who can, please make an effort to attend the funerals of those the state murdered. Bury them with the Kenyan flag, they died for us,” Mwangi said.
Mwangi was a key organiser of the Occupy Parliament protests on the twin Tuesdays of June 18 and 25.

How Chege met his death
In a protest that turned tragic, David Chege accompanied many Kenyan youths in protesting against the Finance Bill 2024. Unfortunately, he became one of the protestors killed during the country’s anti-tax protests.
Chege who was a Maseno School alumnus and IT personnel shot dead outside Kenya’s parliament as a crowd of protesters overwhelmed anti-riot police, breaking into the August house as the protests intensified.
Chege’s death left many heartbroken, calling him a true hero and also demanding justice.
