It is currently the go-to platform for music videos.

But YouTube now faces stiff competition from Spotify, which just launched music video for Spotify users in eleven countries.

Spotify hopes the new feature will allow fans to “dive deeper into an artist’s music.”

“So often, in my own experience and for countless others, music videos play a key role in engaging you: taking you from a listener to leaning in and becoming a fan,” said Charlie Hellman, Vice President and Head of Music Product at Spotify .

“They are an important part of the toolbox of so many artists, and it comes naturally to them to live in the same place where over half a billion people listen to music.”

How to watch music videos on Spotify

Spotify has rolled out music videos in the UK, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Brazil, Colombia, Philippines, Indonesia and Kenya.

  1. If you’re a Premium user in one of these markets, go to your iOS, Android, desktop, or TV device and select the ‘Switch to Video’ toggle for supported music tracks
  2. The music video plays in Now Playing view
  3. To view the video in full screen, put your mobile device in landscape mode
  4. To go back to background listening, tap ‘Switch to Audio’

Spotify already has a number of video options available.

This includes 30-second clips, which artists can add to their album pages or artist profiles, and Canvas – a short, repeating visual that artists can add to songs.

However, until now, users could not watch full music videos in the app.

The feature was announced today and is described as a “powerful way for fans to discover and connect with music.”

In a post on its blog, Spotify explains: “Spotify is where fans go to dive deeper into an artist’s music.

“So whether you’re a superfan looking to rewatch your favorite videos and share them with friends, or a casual fan looking for new releases, music videos create a new connection point with artists.”

From today, a ‘short catalogue’ of music videos is being rolled out in the UK, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Brazil, Colombia, the Philippines, Indonesia and Kenya.

This includes songs from global artists Ed Sheeran, Doja Cat and Ice Spice.

However, there’s a major catch: the feature is only available in beta for Premium users.

If you want to go back to listening in the background, you can tap ‘Switch to Audio’ at any time.

“In this beta launch, we will continue to innovate and iterate based on feedback from both users and artists,” Spotify added.

“Stay tuned as we hope to expand the catalog of music videos and bring the feature to more users and countries.”
