Peruvian music icon Pedro Suárez-Vértiz passes away unexpectedly

The world of Latin music is in mourning; the tragic demise of esteemed Peruvian singer, songwriter, and musician, Pedro Suárez-Vértiz, has been confirmed. Best known for his tenure as the front man and guitarist of the rock band Arena Hash during the late eighties and early nineties, Vértiz’s death came unexpectedly on December 28, 2023, as a result of a heart attack.

Vértiz’s unique blend of pop and rock with Arena Hash carved a niche in Peru’s music scene. Following the band’s dissolution, he launched a highly successful solo career, creating numerous albums and popular songs enjoyed across Latin America.

Surviving Vértiz is his wife, Cynthia Martinez, known affectionately as Pedro Suarez Vertiz Esposa. Reports suggest Martinez is a businesswoman. Throughout their life together, Martinez has been a pillar of support for Vértiz, particularly during his health struggles, which she shared in several interviews.

Martinez and Vértiz’s love story began back in 1991 when both were still in school. A friendship blossomed into romance and eventually marriage, marking the start of a three-decade-long partnership.

The couple started a family, welcoming three children. However, the names of their offspring remain undisclosed in the media. Unverified reports speculate two of their children to be Maria Jose and Savior. Vértiz, known for his privacy, rarely discussed his family life publicly, keeping his personal affairs away from the media spotlight.

Beyond his immediate family, Vértiz was also part of an illustrious lineage. Born on February 13, 1969, in Callao, Peru, both his mother and maternal grandfather served in the Peruvian Navy for many years. It is said that his birth took place in the Naval Hospital of Callao, owing to his family’s naval ties.

Vértiz’s interest in music was ignited at a young age, and his talent was nurtured by his supportive parents. Today, the entire Suarez Vertiz family is grappling with the profound loss of a cherished family member. The legacy left behind by Pedro Suárez-Vértiz in the world of Latin music will continue to resonate for years to come.
