While chatting to Cat Deeley and Ben Shepard, Nicola said her raunchy sex scenes in the bonkbuster felt very awkward at first.

But having known her on-screen lover Luke Newton, who plays Colin Bridgerton, for four years now, she revealed they eventually became comical for her.

Dressed in a stunning gray suit and white vest, the Derry Girls star said: “I think we’ve won the sass for this series!”

To which Ben replied, “So you’ve had your fair share of steamy sex scenes here?”

Nicola laughed and said ‘yes’ before Ben quizzed her about how she handles sex on screen.

She replied, “It’s really nerve-wracking, but luckily I’ve known Luke for four years, and he’s a super nice guy.”

Ben was clearly interested in the topic and then asked her if it would ever get easier.

She said: ‘It’s worse at first and actually better because we can laugh about it. It was quite liberating and quite fun to do.”

“We also have a lot of say in what we want to do,” she added.

She has replaced Simone Ashley as Bridgerton’s leading lady and, like her predecessor, will appear in a number of steamy and daring sex scenes.

Nicola revealed she was ‘terrified’ about filming the intimate moments with co-star Luke Newton – because she is an Irish woman.

The third series, with part one airing on May 16 and part two on June 13, will see Penelope pursue Colin.

Because Irish women are stereotyped with a reputation for being prudish, Nicola told the Six O’Clock Show that she initially thought she couldn’t do the steamy scenes.

“I’m so excited, I can’t wait,” she said. ‘It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. Luke Newton, who plays my love interest, is so great.

“And even my wig has been upgraded. This season is very funny and romantic, they have incorporated a lot of romcom elements.

‘And it’s not something to watch with the whole family. Take what you will from that. It was terrifying. I’m an Irish woman, and any Irish woman would feel like she can’t do this.

‘And then I went and realized: it’s my job, so I can do better. I had an amazing partner and it was terrifying, but really liberating. At the end I was exhausted.’

The third series of the hit Regency romance, which follows the eight Bridgerton siblings as they try to find love, continues Penelope and Colin’s love story.

Speaking on the One Show on Wednesday night, Nicola said the romantic scenes prompted her to ask for a PG version for her parents to watch.

“It’s an action-packed season,” she said. ‘I saw some of them last night and I was bouncing off the walls with excitement.

“She (Penelope) has done her time, she has waited, it’s time for Penelope.

‘I asked for a PG version for my family, because I don’t do that. Now that I saw it last night, I really don’t.

‘Watch with your mother if you want, I won’t watch with mine. I’ll have to get her a separate Netflix account.”
