A massage parlor owner in an elite Sydney suburb has defended placing a sign in the window of her shop reading “non-sexual” in capital letters after it sparked controversy.

Wannisa Piyatrakul, owner of La Massage Thai Remedial & Day Spa in Mosman in the city’s exclusive Lower North Shore, blamed shady men for forcing her to write the blunt message after dozens of them started asking for sexual favors when the establishment opened three months ago.

“We get calls and some people just come in and ask for it. When we first opened there were quite a few guys asking about it,” Ms Piyatrakul told Daily Mail Australia.

“I think it’s best that we have a sign because we want to make sure ladies come in and feel welcome. This is a clean place and we don’t do that. It’s a professional massage.’

The same sign has also been placed on the reception desk to drive home the point.

But a local resident complained about the window sign on a community Facebook page Thursday.

She called it ‘disturbing’ and claimed it was at the eye level of schoolchildren, who could therefore read it.

However, many Mosman residents argued that having the sign was essential to the business as it played a crucial role in protecting employees from unwanted sexual advances.

After being shown the message, which was later deleted, Ms Piyatrakul admitted she had not thought about children walking by and would consider removing the sign in the window.

‘It’s just an annoying misunderstanding when people ask for things like that, because we’re doing something good here. But I wasn’t thinking about the kids walking by,” she said.

“I don’t want to have a problem with parents being angry about the sign.”

It comes just months after a Cairns masseuse criticized “rude” Australian men who demanded a “happy ending” and forced her to hang a sign on her wall.

Darunrat Chansopha, owner of Pha Thai Massage, says the increase in the number of locations offering ‘sexy massages’ has made her job more dangerous.

She has been forced to put up a prominent sign in her waiting room that reads: ‘No happy endings – only excellent massage’.
