She told the Courier Mail she feels embarrassed to admit what she does for a living when she’s in the country.

‘The worst thing for us as an actor in Australia is getting in the back of the cab and a cabbie asking “what do you do?” Because you think, “Oh, God…”‘ she said.

‘You’re constantly having to fight for the space or to justify the fact that you have the right to actually be an artist in Australia.’

She added that actors are more appreciated overseas and she gains an appreciation for Australia’s many talented stars with an outside perspective.

‘Yet overseas, our culture is celebrated and sung and praised but we don’t often do it internally,’ Cate told the publication.

A bonafide A-lister, the Tár star first rose to prominence with her star-making performance in the 1998 historical drama, Elizabeth.

Cate’s portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I was critically acclaimed — garnering her her first ever Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

Although the Elizabeth star would go on to play Galadriel in all three Lord of the Rings films, she wouldn’t win her first Academy Award until 2005.

She finally earned her first Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the 2005 film The Aviator.

Cate ironically won for portraying a famous American actress in The Aviator film — Katharine Hepburn.

Her first Oscar win made her the only actress to ever win an Academy Award for playing another actress in a film.

After her first Oscar, the Carol star has gone on to be nominated for an Academy Award eight times.
