Lily Allen returns dog after passport incident sparks backlash

Lily Allen faces backlash after revealing why she returned her adopted dog to the shelter. The ‘Smile’ singer, who resides in New York with her husband David Harbour of Stranger Things fame and her two daughters, shared the story on her podcast, Miss Me?.

Allen explained that the family had adopted a dog but had to return it to the shelter after an incident, sparking public disapproval. The 39-year-old stated, “We actually did adopt a dog, but it ate my passport, so I took her back to the home.”

The dog’s actions caused significant problems for Allen, as eating the passports prevented her and her children from travelling back to the UK to visit her daughters’ father. “She ate all three of our passports, which had our visas in them,” Allen continued. “I can’t describe how much it cost to replace everything during Covid—it was a logistical nightmare.”

Allen elaborated, “The father of my children lives in England. I couldn’t take them to see their dad for four or five months because this dog had eaten the passports.” She added that the ordeal made it impossible to look at the dog, which she said had “ruined [her] life”.

Defending her decision, Allen described the dog as “very badly behaved” and mentioned that the passports were not the only things the dog had destroyed. “I tried very hard with her, but it just didn’t work out, and the passports were the final straw,” she said.

Allen and Harbour had adopted a puppy named Mary from a New York shelter, believed to have been adopted in 2021. They even created an Instagram page for the dog, but posts ceased shortly after, according to The Independent. The Daily Mail suggested Mary was the dog in question, though Allen did not specify.

Following her revelations, people criticised Allen for returning her dog. One Twitter user remarked, “Lily Allen is all that’s wrong with the world. Got a puppy, used it for Instagram likes, and then sent it back because it chewed up her passports.”

Another added, “Lily Allen is an irresponsible pet owner. Instead of securing family documents, she blames the dog and gets rid of it.”

Others shared their own stories of mishaps with their dogs, emphasising that such incidents didn’t lead them to give up their pets. One person recounted, “My dog Jake once ate gig tickets for a Chris Cornell solo show. Did we get rid of him? No. He’s the best and not responsible for his actions. B*llocks to Lily Allen.”

UNILAD has contacted Allen’s representatives for comment.
