According to multiple sources, the Washington Commanders have signed journeyman quarterback Marcus Mariota to a one-year contract.
ESPN reported that the deal was worth $6 million and could go up to $10 million with incentives for Mariota, who remains in the NFC East after spending 2023 with the Philadelphia Eagles.
“Whatever this staff is, whatever this team needs from me, I’m going to do it to the best of my ability,” Mariota said Thursday during a video call with reporters.
‘I’ve had to deal with a lot of different things in my career. I’ve been a starter, won a playoff game. I have also been circumcised, I have also been injured, I have also been benched. So I think all those experiences create value and also create opportunities for me to build relationships with guys.”
Mariota, drafted No. 2 overall by Tennessee in 2015, compiled a 29-32 record as a starter for the Titans from 2015-2019 and went 5-8 as a starter for the Atlanta Falcons in 2022.

Mariota, the 2014 Heisman Trophy winner at Oregon, has completed 62.7 percent of his passes for 15,820 yards, 93 touchdowns and 55 interceptions in 90 games (74 starts) for the Titans, Las Vegas Raiders (2020-21), Falcons and Eagles.
The Commanders have the No. 2 overall pick in April’s draft and are widely expected to take Jayden Daniels from LSU, assuming Southern California’s Caleb Williams goes to the Chicago Bears at No. 1.
Sam Howell, 23, finished 4-13 as Washington’s starter last season. The 2022 fifth-round pick led the NFL with 612 pass attempts as well as 21 interceptions, throwing for 3,946 yards with 21 touchdowns.
He was traded to the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday for a fourth-round pick and a sixth-round pick in this year’s NFL Draft, leaving Jake Fromm as Washington’s lone signal-caller before Mariota arrived.
Commanders backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who briefly filled in for Howell late in the 2023 campaign, agreed to a one-year contract with the New England Patriots earlier this week.
