Sir Jim Ratcliffe described investing in Manchester United as the most exciting thing he has ever done as the Ineos billionaire attended his first match at Old Trafford since buying 25 percent of his boyhood club.

Ratcliffe joked that he hopes ‘we won’t find anything dodgy’ as he waits for his £1.3 billion investment to be sanctioned sometime in February.

Speaking at an informal meeting with the media before United faced Tottenham on Sunday, Ratcliffe said: ‘It’s the first game for me since we’ve been here.

When asked if this is the most exciting thing he has ever done, the 71-year-old replied: ‘Correct. Yes. I’ve done some exciting things, but there’s no doubt about that. It took a few turns, as you know, but these things take some work. (It will be completed) in early to mid-February. Hopefully we won’t find anything dodgy!’

Failsworth-born Ratcliffe said he last came to Old Trafford ‘two or three years ago’ and was asked when he first visited the club.

‘When I was a child. Quite young. Ten or something like that, it’s been 60 years,” he said, adding that his favorite players are “(Paul) Scholes, Eric (Cantona) probably.”

‘I can’t come all the time because I have some other things. But I will come,” said Ratcliffe, who declined to comment on his first impressions of the club and his influence during the January transfer window.
