A groom who suffered a ghastly fall at work — resulting in him covered in severe chemical burns and needing fingers amputated — tied the knot with his fiancé in the burn unit of a Georgia hospital in a touching ceremony of love.
Preston Cobb, a father of three and decorated veteran of the Iraq War, had plans with his soon-to-be wife, Tanesha, to be married on July 22 after getting engaged in September 2022.
Less than a month before their wedding, Cobb suffered a fall into a chemical spill at work on June 30 — leaving 32 percent of his body burnt.
“I literally watched the skin from my elbow like detach and literally just go to dust and crumble,” Cobb said to Fox Carolina.
“I literally felt like that was going to be the end.”
His injuries were so grave he needed to be airlifted from his job to the Augusta Burn ICU, according to the family’s Gofundme.
The chemical had a temperature of 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit when Cobb fell, resulting in the veteran losing nine of his toes — with doctors needing to amputate four fingers on his right hand and partially amputating an additional four on his left.
Worried that Tanesha wouldn’t “want to marry” him following the accident, Cobb felt he wasn’t “the same person that asked her to marry” due to the burns — but his fiancé was devoted to loving him regardless of how he looked after the accident.
As Cobb embarked on the road to recovery, the couple’s big day loomed closer and nothing would prevent them from becoming husband and wife.
Mary Cook, a nurse at the JMS Burn Center at Doctors Hospital, overheard the couple discussing their wedding plans while caring for Cobb.
Hearing they were determined to be married on their original date — Cook, with the help of her fellow nurses and doctors, organized the ceremony to take place in the burn center.
“She was like, ‘I got good news for you,’ Cobb told the outlet. “And I was like, ‘What’s that?’ and she was like, “You’re getting married on the 22nd.”
Elated by the idea, the couple agreed.
“I wanted to give him something positive out of all this negative,” Cook told the outlet.
There was not a sad face in the unit as family, friends, and nurses surrounded the couple to watch them declare their love officially.
“There’s nothing that would stop me from marrying him,” Tanesha Cobb said to the outlet during the ceremony.
The nurses brought in food, flowers, and even a DJ for the occasion, with the wedding going off without a hitch.
“Even though my condition, it still didn’t stop me from marrying the woman of my dreams,” Cob said.
