Collin Gosselin: Mom Kate institutionalized me because I spoke out about her secret ‘abusive’ behavior

Collin Gosselin has made a bombshell claim that his mother, Kate Gosselin, sent him to a mental health institution in an effort to silence him about her alleged abusive behavior.

“I was starting to tell my teachers that, you know, my mother was … can I use the word abusive or are they not allowed to use that on air?” the now-19-year-old said in a new episode of Vice TV’s “The Dark Side of the 2000s” titled, “Jon & Kate Plus 8: Family Circus.”

When a producer then asked Collin, “Are you trying to say your mother was abusive to you?,” he responded, “Well, yeah, that’s kind of the reason why she sent me away.”

“I was starting to tell people what was going on at home and, you know, she caught wind of that and had to put me somewhere where I wouldn’t be able to get the secrets out,” the reality star further alleged.

Page Six has reached out to Kate’s rep for comment, but did not immediately hear back.

The matriarch – who garnered fame with ex-husband Jon Gosselin, their sextuplets, Collin, Leah, Hannah, Alexis, Aaden and Joel, and twins Mady and Cara on TLC’s “Jon & Kate Plus 8” – has previously denied any abuse claims.

She told “Good Morning America” in 2016 that she had been “investigated many times” and that any claims made about her harming her kids were “always unfounded.”

Kate, 48, sent Collin to Fairmount Behavioral Health Institute, a psychiatric hospital in Philadelphia, in 2016 when he was 12 years old.

The reality star told the public via the media at the time that she did so because her son had “special needs.”

“[There’s] a fairly fluid diagnosis of what those needs are, but he needs to learn certain strategies to help him deal with things,” she previously told People.

“This has been a struggle we’ve had for a very long time, and it’s one I’ve dealt with on my own. I’ve felt very alone in this. By the same token, it’s not something that has only impacted me or him – our entire family has been impacted.”

However, Hannah, who also participated in Vice TV’s doc alongside Collin, backed her brother’s claims that their mother allegedly treated him differently than the rest of the kids.

“He would be separated from us,” she claimed in the episode. “Like, he would not get to come and play outside with us. He would eat dinner at different times than us.”

Jon, who divorced Kate in 2009, alleged that he was unable to know about his son’s whereabouts at the time because he did not have legal custody of his kids.

However, Collin sent him a handwritten letter using crayons in 2018, begging his father to free him from Fairmount Behavioral Health Institute.

“Being in an institution, it took a toll on me mentally,” the teen told Vice TV. “It was a really, really dark place. All I had was myself. I didn’t have anybody else. I had no support system. It was scary. I was confused. I was lost.”

In November 2018, Jon filed for legal and physical custody of Collin, which was eventually granted to the patriarch along with Hannah’s.

However, in September 2020, Collin shockingly took to social media to allege that his dad had been “beating” him, causing the Berks County Child & Youth Services to conduct an investigation.

“My dad is a liar. Yesterday he beat me up and thought nothing of it, he punched me in the face and gave me a swollen nose and I started bleeding,” the then-16-year-old wrote in the since-deleted post.

“He then continued to kick me in the ribs after I was on the floor. He is a liar.”

Jon vehemently denied the allegations, with his rep telling E! News at the time, “No charges have been filed against him and there’s no ongoing CYS investigation.

“Collin has endured severe trauma. Jon is a loving father who has worked hard to ensure that his son gets the support and help he needs.”

Berks County District Attorney John Adams also told People, “There has been no charges or citations filed as a result of that incident.”

Since then, Collin has seemingly remained close with his father, while being estranged from his mother and six of his siblings – aside from Hannah.

“I want to respect their space and their time and respect how they feel about everything, so I’m kind of just waiting for the day that they reach out … I’d rather just let them do it on their own terms,” he told Entertainment Tonight of his brothers and sisters in late 2022.

That same month, Collin also told the outlet that he would be open to a reconciliation with Kate, stating in part, “It would be ideal. It’s unfortunate that we didn’t have a relationship. I think every son wants to have a relationship with their mom.”
