Coleen Rooney speaks for the first time about her ‘hurt and shame’ over Wayne’s prostitute scandal as she admits they had ‘screaming matches’

Coleen Rooney has told how she felt ‘hurt and ashamed’ when she heard her husband Wayne had used prostitutes at a Liverpool massage parlour.

When she first spoke about the incident, which took place in 2002 when the former England captain was 16, she also described it as a “terrible dream” and admitted she could not decide whether her relationship had a future.

Ms Rooney also told how they had ‘shouting matches’ over his infidelity in the Liverpool brothel, where he had sex with a 37-year-old called Gina McCarrick and a 48-year-old grandmother.

My Account Ms Rooney, 37, wrote candidly in her autobiography, recalling the moment he confessed to her.

She said: ‘The whole story was that when Wayne was 16 he had visited prostitutes in a massage parlor in Liverpool. When Wayne told me it was true and that the story was about to appear in the national press, I was confused and hurt. I couldn’t even talk to him.

“More than that, I felt ashamed.”

Mrs Rooney, 37, then a teenager, told how she worried about what others would think of Wayne’s behaviour.

‘Everyone knew and everyone seemed to have an opinion. I sat with everything swirling around me like a terrible dream, unable to decide what was best or what I wanted.

“A voice inside me told me not to rush into anything or make a decision in the midst of my anger.

“It was heartbreaking enough to have to deal with stuff like that, but I was eighteen years old. I was upset and confused because I didn’t know what to think or how others would react.

‘I didn’t know how I felt about Wayne anymore. Plus, I knew my family’s instinct would be to protect me, and no matter how you looked at it, this was not a good impression.”

Mrs Rooney, who now has four sons with Wayne, decided to hold a summit with him and hear his side of the story. She reveals how they had a secret meeting at her aunt’s house in Liverpool where he admitted the details were true, although he insisted some revelations were ‘made up’.

The couple also went on a trip to Blackpool Pleasure Beach, where they tried to live a bit of ‘normality’ – wearing hats and hanging up their collars so they wouldn’t be recognized as they discussed their future.

After several weeks, Mrs Rooney decided to accept Wayne’s apology.

She said: ‘He knew how bad this was, how wrong. He looked at the ground as he told me how devastated he felt after putting me in that situation.

“I was still fuming, of course, and there were definitely a few shouting matches over the next few days. But in the end I accepted that this had happened a long time ago and that we were stronger now, more committed.

‘We were no longer the kids we were back then, Wayne was no longer the cocky kid trying to impress his friends. If I had found out he was having an affair, or if he had told me he was in love with someone else, I wouldn’t have been able to get over it, but that wasn’t the case.’

Mrs Rooney also admits her 38-year-old husband’s behavior has tested her for years – often when he has been drinking alcohol.

She says that drinking has a lot to answer for, and confessed that if Wayne is in trouble, he will get drunk and make things worse.

‘I couldn’t have known it at the time, but I would be tested this way again in the future, more than once. I say the same thing now as I did then. If you’re dealing with something stupid you did in the heat of the moment that involves alcohol, maybe it can be resolved.

‘If there is love, emotions and constant deception, then it is a different story.

‘Alcohol has a lot to explain; as far as Wayne is concerned, it has often been his downfall. When something bothers Wayne, he often bottles it up.

“Instead of coming out with what’s bothering him, ridding himself of the burden, he pushes it down. Then sometimes he goes out and behaves in a way that makes everything worse.”

Ms Rooney also admitted that Wayne – now manager of Birmingham City football club – has sometimes failed to ‘control his drinking’. She reveals how he has ‘binges’

The couple, who have four children – Kai, 14, Klay, ten, Kit, seven, and Cass, five – got together when they were teenagers after Wayne repeatedly asked the now WAG out.

She finally agreed and they went to see an Austin Powers movie and then had McDonalds.

They got engaged in October 2003 when Rooney proposed at an Esso gas station while on their way for a meal at a Chinese restaurant.

He gave her an emerald cut ring and they decided to go to the home of Mrs Rooney’s parents Colette and Tony instead.

There they celebrated with a bottle of champagne and Colette’s corned beef hash – and she also lit some candles for the happy couple.

The Rooneys married in an idyllic ceremony in Italy in the summer of 2008 and welcomed their first son, Kai, in 2009 after suffering a miscarriage several months earlier.

Mrs Rooney told how she lost the baby at ten weeks in late 2008. She told how doctors told her and Wayne the bad news after she started bleeding.

She said of the miscarriage: ‘It’s strange to feel all that excitement and joy, but to have it taken away so quickly – a horrible experience that also cost Wayne six years.

‘At home that night he cried. He desperately wanted to be a father and I could see in his face how devastated he was by the loss.

“It’s terrible,” he said. “I know you’ve been through such a horrible experience, but it’s hard for me too.”

‘I think he just needed to express his feelings, something he didn’t do very often. It stayed with him for a long time after that, probably until I got pregnant again.’
