Bryce Harper makes unreal catch in first Phillies start at first base

Bryce Harper is already looking like a Gold Glove winner at first base.

Making his first career start at first base on Friday night, the 30-year-old — who is normally an outfielder — showed off his range for the Phillies on a foul pop-up at Progressive Field in Cleveland.

Guardians shortstop Amed Rosario led off the bottom of the third inning and sent a 1-1 pitch from Philadelphia starter Ranger Suarez toward the first base stands.

Harper ran over from his position near the line and tracked the pop-up near the camera well.

Sensing that the ball was going to be out of reach, the seven-time All-Star leaped into the well and made the catch before crashing down hard.

Harper avoided injury and remained in the game.

The two-time National League MVP has been recovering from Tommy John surgery and had not played in the field at all this season.

And before Monday, Harper had never played anywhere outside the outfield — save for the times he’s been a designated hitter — in both the majors and minors.

“We’ve prepared him and now it’s just about getting used to game speed and getting used to those situations,” manager Rob Thomson told reporters Friday before the game.

It’s safe to say Harper’s getting used to that game speed quickly.
