And Just Like That showrunner admits writers were 'split' over having Kristin Davis' character TRUDGE through a blizzard to bring her teenage daughter condoms to safely lose her virginity

And Just Like That showrunner Michael Patrick King revealed the series’ writers were divided over whether they would be as progressive of a parent as Charlotte York Goldenblatt (Kristin Davis).

After years of earning the reputation as the most traditional of her friend group, audiences were surprised by her choice to trudge through a snowstorm to bring her teenage daughter, Lily, condoms to safely lose her virginity on Thursday’s episode of the Sex and the City reboot.

While speaking about coming up with the unexpected plotline, King, 68, admitted that the writers’ room transformed into ‘a jury room where every idea is on trial.’

‘We’ve been through this in the writing room and there’s a split, mothers who would get condoms and mothers who wouldn’t,’ he mused to People

The producer, best known for directing and writing for Sex and the City and its film adaptations, acknowledged how the moment showed the growth of Davis’ character, who is also raising a non-binary child.

Mom of the year: And Just Like That showrunner Michael Patrick King revealed the series’ writers were divided over whether they would be as progressive of a parent as Charlotte York Goldenblatt (Kristin Davis)

‘The idea [is] exploring who Charlotte is now with so many changes and put as many obstacles in front of her as we always have,’ he explained. ‘But a bomb cyclone and condoms for her daughter losing her virginity? That’s a high bar for any mother.’

King added that while Charlotte’s ‘essence’ is ‘certainly the same,’ she has ‘learned and grown through her experience.’

‘It would not be fun if she hadn’t grown,’ he concluded.

On the latest episode, Charlotte proved she would do anything for her children – including braving a blizzard to deliver condoms.

The request came after Lily revealed to her mother and father that she was planning on having sex for the first time with her boyfriend, Blake.

The announcement led to a private conversation with her mom, who reminded her to use protection, to which her eldest insisted her beau had covered.

‘Lily, I just really want you to focus on your pleasure just as much as his pleasure,’ she reminded. ‘It is important that you take care of your own needs.’

‘Mom you’ve gone from sex positive to sex annoying!’ Lily fired back.

Despite assuring her mom that she was familiar with safe sex, Lily ends up frantically calling Charlotte after learning her boyfriend assumed she would provide the  condoms.

After initially saying no to bringing her some, Charlotte finally agreed after Lily suggested they just use the pull out method instead.

Ultimately, Charlotte arrives to Blake’s townhouse with a Trojan Pleasure Pack and some final advise for Lily.

‘There is classic, thin, ribbed… I would avoid using the warming one because you get a rash really easily down there,’ she said as she handed her the condoms.

Her younger child, Rock, also experienced a major milestone on the episode as their  Ralph Lauren ad made the Sunday paper.

The episode comes a week after Davis, 58, admitted that she does not have any desire to get married.

Unlike her famous, wedding-obsessed, Sex And The City character said marriage is just not her ‘thing.’

‘I’m not married. I’ve never been married,’ the And Just Like That…star declared. ‘It was never like a goal, let’s say,’ she added.

She has had some famous relationships, however. The star, who has two adopted children of her own, has romanced Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin and Aaron Sorkin.

When asked how she managed to convincingly pull off Charlotte’s scenes (particularly when she was overanalyzing marriage rules) the And Just Like That…star said, ‘That took some acting, let me tell you. It really did.’

It was challenging for Kristin not to, ‘stress out,’ on days where she had to film, ‘a paragraph on a page of all… the rules and the marriage and the whatnot.’

‘I would just be like, “How am I going to do this and make it real and believable?”‘ the Colorado-born beauty recounted.
