In Memoriam: Joe Solomon, Former Guyana and West Indies Cricketer

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Joe Solomon, the distinguished former Guyana and West Indies cricketer. Joe Solomon breathed his last in the USA on Friday at the age of 93.

A right-handed batsman, Solomon etched his name in cricketing history by effecting the run-out that resulted in the first tied Test match between West Indies and Australia in Brisbane in 1960. His remarkable international career spanned from 1958 to 1965, during which he played 27 Test matches, amassing 1,326 runs at an impressive average of 34. Notably, his only Test century was a memorable achievement.

In addition to his Test exploits, Solomon showcased his cricketing prowess in 104 First-Class matches, making his debut in 1956 for British Guiana. Hailing from Port Mourant, Berbice, he accumulated 5,318 runs in First-Class cricket at a commendable average of 41.54. Among his notable achievements were 12 centuries, with an unbeaten 201 standing as his highest score, along with 27 fifties. He also displayed his bowling skills with leg-breaks, claiming 51 First-Class wickets at an average of 38.23, including a best of 4-28.
