Li Wen, the famous Hong Kong-born singer-songwriter, committed suicide on Wednesday and died at the age of 48 after three days in a coma in hospital, her family announced.
Li’s sisters announced the sad news on social media tonight, saying that 48-year-old Li had struggled with depression for a long time in recent years and committed suicide at home on Sunday (July 2).
She was taken to Queen Mary Hospital unconscious and pronounced dead on Wednesday.
Li’s condition has deteriorated dramatically in recent months, the family added.
“Unfortunately, despite CoCo seeking professional help and doing her best to battle her depression, her inner demons took hold.”
This year should be the 30th anniversary of Ding Ding’s debut.
“CoCo has always been known for her unremitting efforts to break new ground for Chinese singers in the international music scene, and she has also tried her best to shine for the Chinese people,” her family said. “We are so proud of them!”
The Hong Kong-born singer broke into the music industry in 1994 and has released over 15 albums that have sold over ten million copies. In December 1999, her single “Do You Want My Love” reached number four on the US Billboard charts.
Li also voiced Mulan in the Mandarin version of Disney’s Mulan.
