Nakhon Phanom was the scene of a blockbuster drug bust yesterday as police and local security forces joined forces to take down major drug lords, confiscating a monumental 56 kilogrammes of heroin and a mind-boggling 121,000 methamphetamine pills in the Thao Uthen district.

This daring operation was set in motion after an explosive tip-off about a narcotics shipment sneaking across the Mekong River from a neighbouring country.

Officers executed a top-secret surveillance operation along the riverbank, and their patience was rewarded when a suspicious fishing boat was spotted.

Two men were seen attempting to load questionable sacks onto a sidecar motorcycle. But just as the exchange was heating up, law enforcement pounced, triggering a dramatic chase.

Police managed to arrest 59 year old Sanguan but his sidekick, 60 year old Laotian national Kalok, managed a hair-raising escape.

The confiscated contraband included 60 hefty bundles of methamphetamine, a staggering 121,000 pills in all, and 140 blocks of heroin, each weighing 400 grammes.

In a jaw-dropping confession, Sanguan, reportedly cash-strapped, revealed he was lured into the operation for a meagre 5,000 baht, thanks to Kalok, fresh out of prison for similar dodgy dealings. He also admitted to his own drug use, frequently dropping 100 baht per meth pill, Pattaya News reported.

With Kalok still on the loose, the police are going all out to bring him to justice. Since the start of October, Nakhon Phanom’s law enforcement has spearheaded 28 drug raids in the border district, arresting 53 suspects and seizing over 1 million methamphetamine pills, 56 kg of heroin, and a trove of additional illicit substances, said a police spokesperson.
