Woolworths announces major new change to its shopping trolleys – but customers are furious: ‘We deserve a discount’

Woolworths is being criticised by customers for introducing a new way of shopping: with a digital shopping cart.

The supermarket giant launched the Scan&Go Trolley trial in Sydney, which allows customers to scan their items as they shop using a tablet.

Before shopping, customers can unlock a tablet by scanning their Everyday Rewards card and placing it on a shopping cart.

You can easily track your purchases and pay for them in one go, without having to remove anything.

The new offering is being trialled at Woolworths Windsor in Sydney’s north-west, with plans to also launch in Warringah Mall, The Ponds, Kellyville North, Lane Cove, Kellyville, Oran Park, Kellyville Grove, Schofields Town Centre and North Parramatta.

But shoppers on TikTok were furious, claiming the new feature made them feel like Woolworths employees.

“Do we get a discount because we do all the work for Woolies?” someone wrote.

“I’m adding ‘Woolies employee’ to my resume,” said another.

A third added: ‘Do I work at Woolworths now?’

“Woolworths is turning us into iPad kids,” someone else joked.

Another said he “just wants cheaper groceries” and not another extra at the store.

“Our customers expect us to deliver both value and convenience,” Woolworths Group chief executive Faye IIhan said in a statement.

‘Scan&Go Trolley is a leading innovation that helps them save time and balance their budget in the supermarket.

‘Depending on the feedback from our customers, we hope to introduce the Scan&Go Trolley in more supermarkets across the country.’

The latest technology is an extension of the Scan&Go mobile function offered at selected locations. The Scan&Go mobile function is available in 74 supermarkets.

How does the Woolworths Scan&Go Trolley trial work?

1. Unlock a device: Scan your Everyday Rewards card to unlock a device and place it in your cart.

2. Scan your items: Scan your items with the built-in scanner and pack your groceries on the go.

3. Pay and go: Once you are ready to check out, proceed to the self-service checkout to pay for your groceries
