The real reason seats at Anfield have been covered up after Liverpool fans thought Trent Alexander-Arnold could be signing a new contract

  • Groups of seats on the Anfield side of the club’s stadium have been covered
  • Hopeful fans believed they could be part of the unveiling of a new contract
  • Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future is yet to be decided amid interest from Real Madrid

Liverpool fans have been dealt a blow after some optimistic supporters suspected Trent Alexander-Arnold would sign a new contract based on seat availability at Anfield.

Arne Slot’s start as Liverpool manager has not been particularly impressive, with the club yet to sign any new players for the summer transfer window.

The departure of Jurgen Klopp at the end of last season heralds a new era at Anfield, with the Reds aiming to challenge Europe’s elite in the Champions League and Premier League in the coming months.

Alexander-Arnold is one of the club’s current stars and Liverpool fans will be hoping to continue the impressive form he showed under Klopp. However, there are concerns he wants to leave the club.

The local star is a fan favourite at Anfield, but Real Madrid are reportedly interested in him, who could offer him the chance to play alongside his England team-mate and good friend Jude Bellingham.

Liverpool fans will be hoping that this will not be the case, as the full-back’s current contract expires next year.

Some supporters even suggested a new long-term deal would be agreed after seeing seats in the club’s stadium covered.

Hopeful theories posted on social media by Liverpool fans suggest that images showing groups of seats in the lower tier of the Anfield Road section of the stadium were covered up as part of an announcement confirming Alexander-Arnold’s contract extension.

Some fans believed that the numbers 66 (Alexander-Arnold’s shirt number) and 2027 were hidden under the blue mesh.

This increased excitement that the team’s vice-captain had committed his future to the Reds.

The real reason, however, is a lot less interesting after it was revealed that protectors had been placed on the seats as repair work was being carried out on the roof.

The front of the grandstand roof is currently being refinished ahead of the start of the new season, with the covers believed to have been in place for at least a week.

Meanwhile, fans will have to wait a little longer to see Alexander-Arnold as he was not named in Liverpool’s 28-man squad that travelled to the United States.

The England international has been given an extended summer break following the Three Lions’ defeat in the Euro 2024 final and will return to action for his club at a later date.
