The fitting song William and Kate jived to at their wedding after-party: Couple danced to Grease hit You’re the One That I Want, biographer Robert Jobson reveals – so what about other royals at their nuptials?

It was a party in the throne room of Buckingham Palace that lasted into the night – and for good reason.

On April 29, 2011, Prince William and the former Kate Middleton married in a majestic ceremony at Westminster Abbey, after which they eloped completely out of sight of the public.

King’s Day writer Robert Jobson revealed in his new biography of the Princess of Wales that the bride and groom danced to ‘You’re The One That I Want’ from the iconic film Grease, while their friends looked on.

The couple danced and mumbled the words John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John first uttered on screen as they looked into each other’s eyes.

William and Kate also enjoyed a live performance from pop star Ellie Goulding, who sang her version of Elton John’s ‘Your Song’

Kate wore a strapless satin dress with an embroidered diamante waist and a white angora bolero cardigan for the evening celebration.

The dress had no train like her lace wedding gown; it was the perfect outfit for Kate and William to dance the night away.

Read below to find out which songs other royals chose for their first dance together.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

In the trailer for their Netflix documentary, Harry and Meghan seemed unsure about what name to choose for the classic first dance.

Meghan said: ‘I just wanted the music to be fun.’

She then asked Harry, “Even our first dance. Song of a thousand dances? I always get it wrong,” before singing some of the lyrics, such as “Mashed potato, do the alligator.”

Of course, she was right: Wilson Pickett’s version of the 1962 hit, Land of a Thousand Dances.

To make it even more special, it was her sister-in-law, Sophie Winkleman, who performed the song at the reception.

In an interview with the Daily Mail at the London Art Biennale, she said: ‘There were a few tears, but I’m not sure whether it was because they were moved or because they wanted me to stop!’

Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia of Sweden

Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia of Sweden were married on June 13, 2015 at the Swedish Royal Chapel.

The duo opened their lavish reception with ‘Sofias Brudvals’, a waltz written by Pelle Arhio and sung by Swedish artist Per Bredhammar.

Later that evening, the couple made a drastic change with performances by Icona Pop and the late Avicii.

It was reported that Dancer Avicii even adapted the lyrics of one of his hits: ‘I met Carl Philip in Ibiza, where we could hang out and talk for a while’.

Princess Eugenie and Jack Brookbank

Princess Eugenie told her that when she went on stage with Jack Brookbank, they danced to the sounds of You’ve Got the Love, the 2008 hit by Florence and the Machine.

And there was a sentimental reason for that choice, as she admitted on her broadcast of the podcast ‘Kate Thornton’s White Wine Question Time’.

“That was our first dance, You’ve Got The Love, and that’s because when we first started dating – Jack and I have been together for 13 years now – we always sang ‘Euge Got The Love,’ not ‘You’ve Got The Love,’” she laughed.

“Nobody knows,” she remarked then. “That’s a really big secret!”
