A man climbed a building in Melbourne’s CBD with a knife after being chased by police officers.

Officers negotiated with the man after he fled via several floors onto the scaffolding at the site where the new city hall station is being built.

Police were called to the location on the corner of Swanston Street and Flinders Lane at around 6.30am on Friday after reports of a man armed with a knife.

The building, part of the metro tunnel project, has been evacuated, with construction workers standing around the former city square.
