Space Cadet trailer finds Emma Roberts trying to transform from a Florida party girl to a NASA astronaut

Emma Roberts plays a reformed party girl trying to make her way in the world as an unconventional astronaut in the first trailer for Space Cadet.

The 33-year-old actress plays a woman named Rex, who as a child always dreamed of becoming an astronaut… even though life just got in the way.

Now working as a bartender in Florida, Rex decides to pursue her dreams…with the help of a highly embellished resume.

Roberts also serves as an executive producer on the film, along with writer-director Garcia.

The film from writer-director Liz W. Garcia (Purple Hearts, The Lifeguard) will be available to stream on Prime Video on July 4.

The trailer opens with Rex looking at the stars and saying in voiceover, “Once upon a time, I dreamed bigger.”

They show flashback footage of Rex as a little girl, watching the launch of a space shuttle at Cape Canaveral in Florida.

“One day that will be you, Rex,” the young girl’s mother says, as Rex adds, “I know, Mom.”

“But sometimes life doesn’t always go the way you planned,” she adds, as we see her working as a bartender as an adult.

A larger man runs to the bar and says, “You,” and she reluctantly says, “Can I get you another drink?”

She is later seen collapsing on her bed and then partying around a campfire and calling “last call” at her bar.

In voiceover, she adds, “Ten years ago I got lost, but it’s not too late,” as she excitedly tells her friend Nadine (Poppy Liu), “I’m going to be an astronaut!”

“Oh my God…wait, are you coming again?” Nadine says, as Rex happily writes a letter to NASA, while Nadine looks at the resume she created.

“No, girl, this resume will never get you in…but let’s make a few changes that will,” Nadine says, as we see some of the embellishments Nadine makes to the resume, including attending MIT, flying fighter jets and even winning a Pulitzer Prize.

Apparently one of the changes was changing her name to ‘Dr. Tiffany Simpson,” as she was told she was accepted into astronaut training.

We get a glimpse of her competition, including doctors, pilots and soldiers, as they are all together and told by Rudolph Bolton (Dave Foley) that there is a special name for astronaut candidates – ASCANS – which makes Rex laugh.

Rudolph goes on to say that they will be “trained and tested” over the next nine weeks and that most candidates “will not pass.”

During a meeting, Rudolph asks if they are sure ‘Dr. Simpson belongs here,” as Pam Proctor (Gabrielle Union) says, “We need unconventional candidates. She built a series of gates to protect the manatees from speedboats!’

Toddrick (Sebastian Yatra) tells Rex, “When we were kids, you inspired me,” as Rex clearly doesn’t know how to respond.

Rex calls Nadine angrily and says, “You took out everything about making up my CV and said it wasn’t made up.”

Nadine tells her, “Get your house back before you hurt anyone.”

Rex says, ‘I was born to do this! Once you take your dreams out, you can’t just put them back in again.’

The trailer ends with Rex on a plane, screaming that she can’t fly as she actually takes off, adding, “Is this thing hard to land too, or…”
