Sergio Perez’s father ‘suffers pre-heart attack and found unconscious in his bathroom’ after ‘the shock’ of Red Bull star’s crash at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix

  • The incident caused the Mexican’s father to suffer a heart attack in Mexico
  • He was rushed to hospital and remains under observation following the health crisis

Sergio Perez’s father is in a ‘stable’ condition after the Mexican driver suffered a heart attack shortly after his crash at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Perez and Carlos Sainz were involved in a high-speed crash during the closing laps of the race while battling for third place in Baku.

Fortunately, both drivers emerged from the incident unharmed.

However, the crash left Antonio Perez Garibay with a “pre-infraction,” a condition involving chest pain that can occur before a heart attack.

According to Mexican publication Medio Tiempo, Perez Garibay said: ‘Everything happened after the accident. The shock of the accident could have been the cause. They are already examining my heart to see why I fainted.’

Perez Garibay’s press service confirmed in an official statement that it was a medical panic attack.

“Perez Garibay was found unconscious in the bathroom of his home in Mexico City, where paramedics immediately provided medical attention,” the statement said.

He was rushed to a hospital in the capital, where he is currently under medical supervision and in stable condition.

“We thank you for your expressions of support and affection.”

Perez Garibay’s racing organisation, Scuderia Perez, also confirmed that the 65-year-old remains in hospital for observation.

“Mr. Perez Garibay is stable but remains in intensive care and is under constant medical monitoring, with particular focus on his heart and other vital organs,” the statement said.

‘The responsible specialists have indicated that his condition is being closely monitored.’

With his father in hospital, Perez must now concentrate on the Singapore GP on Sunday.

Perez's late crash in Baku meant he had to wait for his first podium since the Chinese GP.

It is an important race for Perez as he aims to get back on the podium for the first time since the Chinese GP in April.

He has also dropped to eighth place in the drivers’ standings with 143 points.

Red Bull also needs Perez to fight back after falling behind McLaren in the Constructors’ Championship.

Oscar Piastri’s victory and Lando Norris’ fourth place in Baku allowed McLaren to overtake Red Bull and build a 20-point lead with seven races remaining.
