Renowned Australian opera singer Steve Davislim dies aged 57 after ‘prolonged illness’

Renowned Australian opera singer Steve Davislim died on Sunday at the age of 57.

No cause of death has been released, but he suffered from a long illness, Hernia reported.

The opera tenor was born in Penang, Malaysia in 1967 to a Chinese father and an Irish mother. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Australia.

Davislim had a passion for music from an early age and as a child he played the horn in local bands in Melbourne.

He completed his Bachelor of Music at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, after which he began his incredible career as an opera tenor.

During his successful career, the singer has performed in many well-known opera productions in Australia and internationally, including Così fan tutte and The Barber of Seville.

Davislim has amazed audiences in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls, including the Sydney Opera House, the Berliner Staatsoper and the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

He also worked with many of Australia’s most respected conductors, including Simone Young and Sir Charles Mackerras.

In his later years he lived in Vienna, Austria, where he died.

Opera Australia confirmed the news of his passing in a heartbreaking post on Facebook.

“Today we learned the sad news that renowned Australian tenor Steve Davislim has passed away,” they began.

‘Steve had a fantastic international career, largely in European opera houses and concert halls, where he appeared with many of the world’s finest conductors. He was also a great recording artist, covering a wide repertoire.
