Paloma Faith insists co-parenting ‘doesn’t exist’ as women still do the bulk of child-rearing and admits being a single mother is ‘exhausting’

She used her performance at Glastonbury to give men this relationship advice: ‘If you’re married and you see a woman doing the same thing every day, that’s what she should do. Do it.’

And now Paloma Faith, 43, has said that ‘co-parenting’ doesn’t exist because societal expectations still leave women doing the bulk of the work.

The mother of two explained that many mothers fear being judged. She said: ‘When I talk openly about my struggles with motherhood and IVF, people say I’m ungrateful.

‘I know better than anyone how grateful I am.

“When people react like that, it’s annoying. I think that’s why so many mothers discount the downsides of parenthood: how much they love their children, for fear of being judged.”

The Only Love Can Hurt Like This singer spoke to Women’s Health on the occasion of the launch of her new book, MILF: Motherhood, Identity, Love and F***ery.

She said: ‘I wanted to do it because I feel like society neglects women and mothers. It makes us feel isolated because we end up having to pretend that everything is magical, but it’s not always magical; it’s hard and women have it hard.

“I don’t think co-parenting exists; women still do the majority of child-rearing. There are anomalies, but we need to change.”

She continues: ‘Being a single mother is tiring, but I do have two evenings a week when my daughters are with their father, so I can do what I want.’

The Lullaby singer has two daughters – eight and three – with her ex-husband and French artist Leyman Lahcine, whom she divorced in 2022 after a ten-year relationship and five years of marriage.

It was parenthood that killed their relationship. Mrs Faith said: ‘I think becoming a mother was such a huge life-changing experience for me that for the first time in my life I needed more than nothing. And it just wasn’t there.

“Our relationship ended because we had those kids. And I think it was worth it.”

Last month she hit out at Glastonbury trolls and pleaded with music fans to “give women a chance” after a number of female artists suffered technical problems.

When 210,000 revellers descended on Worthy Farm in Somerset in late June, millions of people watched from home thanks to the BBC’s continuous coverage.

But after SZA, Dua Lipa, Shania Twain and Cyndi Lauper were criticized and accused of ‘miming’ when sound issues disrupted their performances, Paloma couldn’t help but clap back.

The Warrior singer took to her Instagram Stories to remind viewers that women aren’t on stage to be “shamed and ridiculed,” but to be “bosses.”

She wrote to her 835,000 followers: ‘The way people are criticising the women who performed @glastonbury online is absolutely appalling.’

‘I think people need to understand that women are not on stage to be ridiculed and shamed. We are there with all our power as bosses and supporting each other.

‘GIVE WOMEN A BREAK.’

She continued: 'Being a single mother is tiring, but I do have two evenings a week when my daughters are with their father, so I can do what I want.'
