Only Connect viewers were left ‘screaming at their screens’ over a questioning blunder when the BBC series resumed on Monday night.
The 20th series of the notoriously tough BBC2 quiz show, presented by Victoria Coren Mitchell, concluded with two teams – the Al Frescans and the Midlanders – battling it out in the hope of taking home the coveted trophy.
Everything seemed to be going well until the quizzers reached the third round and had to play the Connecting Wall. This wall consisted of 16 jumbled clues that had to be sorted into four connected groups within two and a half minutes.
The Al Frescans successfully defeated all four groups and scored a maximum of 10 points, but the Midlanders were left puzzled and failed to realise that Firework, Hot N Cold, ET and Rise are hit singles by Katy Perry.
Instead, they wrongly guessed that they were Drew Barrymore films, meaning they gave three groups the correct answer.

Presenter Victoria said: ‘If I wanted to be visibly biting my nails on screen I would have done it there… I think you guys are clearly not fans of Katy Perry’s work. Katy Perry songs, that’s what they are.’
Viewers played along at home, but were annoyed that the Midlanders didn’t know a single Katie Perry song.
Someone wrote on the social media platform X: ‘I’m shouting ‘KATY PERRY SONGS’ at the TV #onlyconnect’;
‘Early contender for most annoying team member… I give you…’;
‘Well, tonight’s broadcast of Only Connect made me realise that I have a good knowledge of Katy Perry’s songs and Welsh castles, despite the fact that I don’t own any of her albums and haven’t visited any of her castles’;
‘Smart people on Only Connect don’t recognize Katy Perry songs, like what planet are you living on?’
Last month, the BBC confirmed the return of ‘Quizzy Mondays’, which will see a variety of challenging programmes air on the channel.

In addition to Only Connect, the other regular participants Mastermind and University Challenge also returned on Monday evening.
Clive Myrie started presenting on Mastermind at 7:30pm, with Victoria resuming her presenting duties on Only Connect half an hour later.
At 8:30 PM, Amol Rajan closed the evening with the latest episode of University Challenge.
