Kevin Walters has reportedly been sacked by the Brisbane Broncos.

The Broncos have severed ties with their coach following a club-wide review of the team’s shocking demise in the 2024 season, in which they finished 12th.

On Thursday evening, Walters was told he had to leave, as the club terminated his contract, which expired in 2026.

Broncos chairman Karl Morris said News Corp: ‘We sympathize deeply with Kev.

‘He will always be a respected person and a Broncos legend and he will always be treated as such.

“Of course I’m shocked. This is a huge job and a stressful job at the Broncos.

‘We are very grateful to Kevvie for his efforts and wish him all the best.’

The Broncos’ playing group was informed of Walters’ fate on Thursday evening, the report said.

Walters is a legend in Brisbane, winning five championships during his illustrious playing career at the club, where he made 241 appearances in the first division.

In 2021, he succeeded Anthony Seibold and led the club from dead last on the NRL ladder to second in the Premier League last year.

The 56-year-old received public support from Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy two weeks ago, but the board appears to have had a change of heart and taken the axe.

He coached 99 games for the Broncos and had a winning percentage of 50.5 percent.

Walters recently hired a new coaching team consisting of Trent Barrett and Ben Te’o.

The Broncos’ search for a new head coach begins immediately.

More to come.
