Katy Perry will receive MTV Video Vanguard Award and perform at 2024 VMAs after Woman’s World flop

Katy Perry is the woman of the hour at next month’s MTV Video Music Awards.

The 39-year-old artist from number 143 will perform at the 41st annual awards ceremony, where she will also receive the Video Vanguard Award.

“Katy is a musical powerhouse and a true pop culture icon,” said Bruce Gillmer, Chief Content Officer of Music at Paramount+ and President of Music, Music Talent, Programming and Events at Paramount in a statement, according to AP.

“With her groundbreaking creative vision, she has become a global phenomenon, conquering the world’s biggest stages,” Gillmer added.

The award comes after Perry delighted fans with her musical comeback last year, releasing the lead single Woman’s World from her seventh studio album 143, which flopped on the charts.

Perry received mixed reactions after releasing the music video for the song, which had a patriotic theme and focused on pseudo-empowerment of women.

“We’re just having fun, being a little sarcastic with it,” she defended the visual in a behind-the-scenes clip. “It’s very slapstick and very straight to the point.

“This set, it’s like, ‘Oooh, we’re not about the male gaze, but we are about the male gaze.’ And we’re really overdoing it and being too direct about it,” Perry explains.

Meanwhile, Perry has faced widespread criticism after her latest music video for ‘Lifetimes’ was filmed on protected sand dunes in the Balearic Islands.

The government of the Spanish archipelago has now launched an investigation after production took place without permission.

“The local video production company assured us that all necessary permits for the video had been obtained,” a spokesperson for Perry’s record label, Capitol Records, told Variety.

‘We have since learned that one permit was pending, although we had received verbal permission to proceed.’

The spokesperson added: ‘We have adhered to all regulations governing filming in this area and have the utmost respect for this location and the officials charged with protecting it.’

This marks Perry’s first time attending the VMAs since she performed and hosted in 2017.

This year’s VMAs have been postponed a day to avoid clashing with the presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards will air live on September 11 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
