Illegal migrant who shot female cop was set to be deported to Venezuela before judge spared him

A Venezuelan migrant who shot a female police officer in Texas will be deported to his home country, it has been announced.

Jorge Chacon-Gutierrez, 25, crossed the border illegally into Eagle Pass, Texas, along with nearly 600 other migrants in November 2023.

At the time, border agents were in the process of registering him for “expedited deportation,” but he claimed he feared persecution if he returned to Venezuela, so he took his case to an asylum officer. an unidentified source from Homeland Security told the New York Post.

The asylum officer rejected his application and continued the deportation procedure.

However, Chacon-Gutierrez wanted to take his claim to an immigration judge, who quickly vacated his deportation order and allowed his case to proceed.

Jorge Chacon-Gutierrez, 25, has been identified by San Antonio TV station WOAI as the illegal immigrant who opened fire on three police officers Sunday morning

According to a Homeland Security source, the case highlights how the U.S. immigration system has “so many loopholes.” Police say Chacon-Gutierrez opened fire on three police officers responding to a domestic violence report at a San Antonio apartment.

Police said they arrived at the apartment around 3 a.m. Sunday after the shooter’s girlfriend was attacked by him, police said.

“When officers entered the apartment, (the shooter) was lying on the bed with a gun next to him, and he began shooting at the officer,” Police Chief William McManus told reporters.

“The officers returned fire. They left the apartment.”

SWAT officers later entered the apartment and “observed the suspect deceased,” but McManus could not say whether the shooter had injured himself or been hit by police grenades.
