Iconic nineties children’s show is ‘returning after 17 years off air’ – with comedian Romesh Ranganathan set to step in as its new host

It was the iconic 90s TV series that gripped every family during teatime and gained cult status during the 17 years it was on TV.

Now Art Attack is back and it comes with a whole new look, according to the Sun.

The ITV children’s programme, which saw 67-year-old national star Neil Buchanan showcase his artistic talents from 1990 to 2007, will reportedly now be presented by comedian Romesh Ranganathan.

Romesh, who doesn’t exactly have a great reputation for his artistic talents, will have some big boys to fill in his new role, as his predecessor was such a good artist that he was accused of being the secret artist Banksy.

In 2020, the rumors spread so quickly on social media that Neil felt compelled to respond to them publicly.

The British TV personality, 67, was speculated as the elusive artist after a Twitter A user’s post about the conspiracy theory went viral.

The user, who has been retweeted over 2,000 times, wrote: ‘Just heard there’s rumours going around that Neil Buchanan is Banksy. If that’s true it’s the funniest shit ever. Aintree’s finest.

“He’s a musician and art has followed him to the cities of shows he’s reportedly done. This falls squarely into the “believe without question” category.”

A spokesperson for Neil wrote a statement on his website indicating that they had been inundated with inquiries from people wanting to verify the rumor.

They dismissed the suggestion, writing: ‘Unfortunately, this website does not have the infrastructure to answer all of these questions individually, but we can confirm that there is no truth to the rumor.

‘Neil spent lockdown with vulnerable members of his family and is now preparing for the launch of his new art collection in 2021. Thank you and stay safe.’

Banksy, born in Bristol, has made a name for himself with his large-scale public artworks, but still manages to keep his identity a secret.

Several attempts to unmask Bansky, whose best-known works include Balloon Girl, Follow Your Dreams and London Underground Rats, have failed. Robin Gunningham is the most frequently mentioned possible street artist.

Social media users recall Neil’s large outdoor artwork on Art Attack as one of the reasons they believe the conspiracy, admitting they will believe the rumor even if there is no direct evidence.

Someone wrote: ‘I heard the rumour that Banksy is Neil Buchanan and I don’t need any proof or substance for that, it’s absolutely the only thing I choose to believe this year.’

“The rumor that 90s/00s icon Neil Buhanan is Banksy is simultaneously the best and weirdest thing to happen in 2020. And I never expected a conspiracy theory to be so true,” wrote another.

A third added: ‘Neil Buchanan saying he’s not Banksy sounds an awful lot like what Banksy would say’

Who is Neil Buchanan?

Neil Buchanan is best known for presenting the popular children’s programme Art Attack between 1990 and 2007. He has a long history as an award-winning artist, having won two BAFTAS.

Neil was born in Aintree, UK and joined the heavy metal band Marseille in 1976. When the band broke up he applied for a job advertised in a newspaper and caught the attention of TV producers by sending a photo of himself from his youth with a monkey on his knee instead of a publicity shot of himself.

He soon found success presenting TV shows such as Finders Keepers, it’s a Mystery and ZZZap!.

Neil came up with the ideas for over 500 episodes of Art Attack, which have now been broadcast in over 30 countries. The successful CITV show became one of ITV’s longest-running programmes, attracting over six million viewers each week.

In one of the most memorable episodes of Art Attack, the artist created a huge portrait of the Queen, spending half a million pounds of real money to create it.

He said that as a child he was inspired by cartoons and comics, including Beano.

Neil is currently an ambassador for the Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts. He spends most of his time painting and exhibiting his artwork, having achieved his lifelong ambition to create a cartoon character for Disney when they acquired the rights to his Art Attack format.

The 58-year-old will release his new art collection in 2021.
