GB triathlon star Alex Yee infuriates rival with cheeky celebration before he even crosses the line in supertri Boston win – just weeks after Olympic gold medal win in Paris

  • The Briton beat Hayden Wilde with 2.5km to go in a dramatic Olympic victory in July
  • He dropped it later in Boston, overtaking the New Zealander at the final corner
  • But Wilde was furious when Yee folded his arms in celebration of victory with just a few metres to go

British triathlon star Alex Yee has repeated his Olympic trick by overtaking rival Hayden Wilde at the last minute to secure victory, but this time he celebrated before he even crossed the finish line.

The Briton beat his New Zealand opponent with just over 2km to go in a gruelling triathlon in Paris last month, making up a 14-second deficit to take gold.

The sudden revival seemed to come out of nowhere when the 26-year-old sprinted away from his fellow athlete to take back the silver he had won in Tokyo three years earlier.

Wilde, who was completely wasted and panting in the scorching Paris heat, recalling his loss, might have thought his last-minute comeback was a one-off.

But he was wrong as Yee struck lightning twice yesterday to secure victory at the Boston Supertri.

As the Briton approached the finish line, he crossed his arms in celebration, then broke the tape, his arms still crossed and staring into the camera.

Wilde, who followed Yee across the finish line just a second later, was not exactly pleased with his opponent’s behaviour. He threw his arms up in disbelief and shook his head.

Either way, the Englishman can now bask in the glory of another victory in a growing rivalry between the two after a tactical performance in the United States.

The supertri consists of three triathlons in a row and Yee found himself setting the pace from the first bike leg – the second part of the race.

By the time the athletes first took to the start line, the eventual podium finishers, Yee, Wilde and Frenchman Dorian Coninx, had already broken away from the chasing pack.

During the second triathlon, the Briton fell back slightly when Vincent Luis, also from France, took the lead after a strong swimming performance.

However, Yee soon got back into the competition and when the final phase began, there were six athletes competing against each other.

And the group stayed together until the final run, which the Englishman started badly after appearing to drop his bike.

While Wilde was in front, Yee pushed on and put the pedal to the metal, only overtaking the New Zealander at the final corner.

A quick glance over the shoulder as the pair approached the tape, and Yee began to cheer confidently. Seconds after the race had ended, he was still staring into the camera, while Wilde fumed in the background.

The Briton also won bronze in the team triathlon event in Paris, after he and teammates Georgia Taylor-Brown, Samuel Dickinson and Beth Potter were denied silver following a rematch.
