Gary Lineker appeared to direct a balding attack on Frank Lampard during the BBC’s live coverage of Euro 2024 in Germany – to the apparent anger of the Chelsea great.

The 45-year-old Lampard was part of the broadcasting giant’s expert panel alongside Alex Scott and Thomas Frank for Germany’s 2-0 win over Hungary on Wednesday.

The BBC’s sleek studio is located directly in front of Berlin’s famous Brandenburg Gate and close to a fan park where matches are shown during the tournament.

After the match, Lineker told viewers that footage of German supporters wildly celebrating a goal was recorded from the nearby events room.

However, a large screen separated the studio from the park.

“I wish they would take that screen away so we could see all the gamblers,” Lineker said. “But if they took the screen away, they wouldn’t be able to see the game.”

Lampard then replied: “The back of the head… who wouldn’t turn up for that?”

In a brutal and unprovoked response, Lineker took a swipe at Lampard’s haircut.

“Nobody wants to see the back of your head these days, right, Frank?” the host said, causing disbelief on X, formerly Twitter. ‘That’s for sure.’

The smile on Lampard’s face visibly disappeared in a split second as Lineker quickly changed the subject, leading some to suggest the comment had irritated him.

“That’s cruel,” one X user posted alongside two crying, laughing emojis.

‘Smoking!!!!’ added another.

Meanwhile, a third said: ‘That’s a booking, Gary.’

Lampard, who endured a poor spell at Chelsea in his last role, is still out of work this summer but is reportedly a strong contender to take over at Burnley.

Former Clarets manager Vincent Kompany was unveiled as Bayern Munich’s shock new head coach last month, leaving his position at Turf Moor vacant.

England legend Lampard’s last permanent coaching role lasted just under a year during a spell at Everton, where he recorded just 12 wins from 44 games in charge.
