ATLANTA– Four people were shot at a food court in downtown Atlanta on Tuesday afternoon, including the first gunman, the city’s mayor said.
Mayor Andre Dickens said on the social media site
Atlanta police said in a release that all four victims were alert and conscious. One of the four is believed to be the suspect, authorities said.
Officials did not immediately say who wounded the first gunman or what prompted the shooting.
Peach Tree Center is a complex of office towers and an underground shopping center within blocks of several hotels that serve Atlanta’s busy convention business.
Crowds of people gathered at a nearby intersection, many asking each other what had happened. Several blocks of Peachtree Street were cordoned off with tape as police officers and firefighters arrived on the scene.
Elizabeth Ingram of Atlanta was leaving the cafeteria of the Chick-fil-A where she works when she heard the first shots nearby.
“We relaxed for a moment and then we heard more shooting,” she said. “So we went straight back down.”
Ingram said she saw people being wheeled away on stretchers.
“You never know what could happen,” she said. “It just happened out of the blue. It was so scary that I thought I would never get home to my son, and that scared me. My heart was beating so fast.”
