A Thai woman had a miraculous escape from a fiery fate after her pickup truck caught fire while she was driving. Thanks to the heroic actions of a quick-thinking motorcyclist, she was pulled to safety just moments before her vehicle was completely engulfed in flames. The heart-stopping incident unfolded at 8.30pm, yesterday, November 17, on Highway 22 in Nakhon Phanom province.

The terrifying blaze erupted in a black four-door Vigo pickup truck, sporting the registration plate ขข 3567 Nakhon Si Thammarat, as it barrelled down the inbound four-lane road near Ban Hua Phon and Ban Don Yang Nang in the Na Sai subdistrict.

The driver, known only as 31 year old Meranee from Nophitam District, Nakhon Si Thammarat, emerged unharmed, all thanks to the timely intervention. A worker in the industrial sector of Sakon Nakhon, Meranee had forgotten her phone in town and was taking a detour to retrieve it after dining at a local eatery in the Nong Yat subdistrict.

Investigators revealed that Meranee was on her way back from a Kathin religious festival in Mukdahan province with friends, intending to drop off a relative at Nakhon Phanom Airport, about 15 kilometres from the city. It was during this journey she realised her phone was left at a restaurant in Ban Don Mong, Nong Yat subdistrict, prompting her to make a U-turn.

As she drove, a vigilant motorcyclist spotted sparks shooting from the vehicle’s side. Meranee remained oblivious to the looming peril until flames started licking at her pickup. In a moment that could have been scripted for the big screen, the motorcyclist raced to her rescue, pulling her from the car just in time, averting what could have been a dreadful disaster. Thankfully, Meranee was left unharmed by the ordeal.

Eyewitnesses painted a vivid picture of the drama, recounting how they drove behind the truck and saw sparks flying from the front right wheel. Realising the driver was in grave danger, they sprang into action, pursuing the vehicle and yanking open the door to pull her out.

Cement mixer

With no firefighting equipment at hand and fearing the vehicle might explode, a sigh of relief came when two cement mixer trucks rolled in, using their reserve water to extinguish the fears—and the flames. The local fire brigade put the final touches on the operation within five minutes, though the truck was beyond saving.

After her narrow escape, Meranee made an official report at Mueang Nakhon Phanom Police Station, given that her vehicle was insured. Arrangements were promptly made to tow the charred remains to the station for investigation and safekeeping, reported KhaoSod

This hair-raising incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the power of community action in emergencies. The swift response and bravery of the motorcyclist, combined with the unexpected assistance from passing vehicles, transformed a potential catastrophe into a story of survival and community spirit.
