Fans SLAM Austria’s ‘terrible’ defending against Turkey as Merih Demiral scores after just 57 seconds of Euro 2024 last-16 clash

Fans have criticised Austria’s defence after the team conceded a goal within a minute of the round of 16 of Euro 2024 against Turkey.

Turkey came out of the blocks quickly after kick-off and were awarded a corner after a pass from Arda Guler to Baris Alper Yilmaz was intercepted by Philipp Lienhart.

Austria failed to clear the ball out of the corner and Merih Demiral scored from close range after 57 seconds.

And Ralf Rangnick’s men, who were praised for their performances in the group stage, are now being heavily criticised by fans on social media.

One said: ‘That defence was just awful. With the way Austria attack games, hopefully there should be a great game now’.

Another wrote: ’58 seconds gone and Turkey takes the lead. What a sloppy piece of defending from Austria. Looks like we have a great football match ahead of us’.

A third posted: ‘Austria made a dog’s breakfast of that sequence. Poor defending on the goal line. They gave Merih Demiral that goal. 1-0 Turkey.’

“Well done Austria, you defend fantastic on all fronts,” a fourth fan said sarcastically on X.

Demiral’s goal against Austria is historic: it is the second-fastest goal ever at a European Championship.

The fastest time was recorded earlier this year in the tournament, when Albania’s Nedim Bajrami scored against Italy in 23 seconds.
