Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag and Roy Keane had an awkward exchange after their opening day win over Fulham, with the former club captain issuing a light-hearted warning to the Dutchman.

The Red Devils opened their Premier League campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Fulham at Old Trafford.

New signing Joshua Zirkzee came off the bench to score the winning goal in the 87th minute, with the £36.5m striker ensuring Man United made the ideal start to the new season.

Manchester United manager Ten Hag hopes the win will mark the start of a better Premier League season, having finished eighth last season.

Ten Hag was interviewed by Sky Sports on the sidelines at Old Trafford after the match, along with former club captains Keane and Gary Neville and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher.

Sky Sports presenter Kelly Cates asked Keane if he had anything to add following Ten Hag’s post-match interview.

Keane replied that he was ‘just listening before he added’‘There is a good atmosphere.’

Ten Hag quickly joked:“Oh, you don’t want to spoil the mood, do you?” he says, placing a hand on Keane’s shoulder during a light-hearted conversation.

Keane, who was fiercely critical of Man United’s problems last season, responded: ‘Not tonight, not next week, not next week.’

After Ten Hag replied: ‘I know, thank you’, Keane warned ominously: ‘I’ll wait’, before adding: ‘Keep winning, that’s easy, that won’t be a problem’.

Ten Hag replied:It’s that simple’ at the end of the conversation with the former Man United captain turned pundit.

Manchester United fans on social media enjoyed the exchange between the two, with one calling Keane’s quick response to Ten Hag ‘epic’.

Others pointed to Ten Hag’s approach to the discussion and suggested the Man United manager did not respond ‘more optimistically’ to experts.

‘Since the FA Cup Ten Hag has been very bullish in interviews. I think it’s great,’ said one.

‘ETH still mad at Roy over the post match interview in the FA Cup final. They need to drink beer,’ claimed another.

Ten Hag and Keane had a similar light-hearted but awkward exchange after Man United’s FA Cup final victory over Man City at the end of last season.

The Man United manager joked that Keane was ‘struggling to manage a team’, referring to the Irishman’s own coaching status.

The comment appeared to refer to Keane’s criticism of Man United during a difficult season.

Ten Hag responded to an expert after the victory at Wembley, just before the club decided to extend his contract for another 12 months.
